Don Underhill
My life as an artist has taken some interesting turns in the last few years...
Change sometimes my friend, sometimes the adversary... has nudged me away from what was perceived as known toward many improbable paths...that remains true even now...
My earliest memories of painting and drawing were sitting on my Grandmother’s lap in church, coloring on the back of a hand held fan. Painting, or doing something creative with my hands has always focused and nurtured my restless soul.
Having traveled and lived all over the world, I’ve stood in some of the most remote and amazing places, offering a broad array of color for my explorer's heart and palate. Finding expression for the music inside my soul and sharing that message is what ignites my passions.
As a young boy living in Moret Sur Loing, France, I spent long hours watching and talking with the Artists painting along the Loing River and in the village streets. What began as curious observation and play has become a life long journey of self-discovery.
There are so many people who have inspired, taught me, encouraged and lifted the vessel of my soul across extraordinary vistas... I would not be who I am without them... My family, friends and beloved three children; Brody, Moriah & Claire have been steady anchors each one; now on their own unique journeys....there are so many... we cannot arrive at our destination without the love and support of others... I must acknowledge my cherished friend and Angel, Jae... who's journey of intention mirrored my own... her brilliant imagination, determined generous heart, improbable arrival on my path , have both inspired and lifted my heart more than she can know. To be lucky enough to find such a soul and life long friend is rare... I am so very grateful for all she has taught me...I am a better man for having her touch the very essence of my soul and spirit...
I prefer to use various mediums with a focus on oils. I’m ‘at home’ with pastoral settings, impressionistic techniques, large abstract panels utilizing Venetian plasters, acrylics, and other collage style materials.
Although I pursue my passion of painting, my primary vocation has been as a Kitchen and Bath Designer - creating beautiful and functional spaces for homeowners. I love preparing gourmet meals with friends. Good food, great wines, and fellowship are nurturing and basic. A few years ago, I began painting murals on tile back-splashes in kitchens or for decorative accents to tile walls thus integrating both disciplines of design and painting.
I am currently working on a book of poems and essays; a chronicle of my personal transformation over the last few years. My hope is that I help affirm your journey, bring inspiration, comfort and fill your sails with music as you pursue your dreams. I look forward to hearing about your journey of intention...
May love's embrace find you and transform you often...
